I often tag Generation X for the way that it loses itself in irony. (Rightly, I think; tritely, I realize.) We don’t know whether we like the thing or hate the thing, whether we’re having fun or making fun. We’re both enjoying the sarcasm and burdened with it.

But we sure didn’t invent it. Masters like Charles Grodin did.

His visits with David Letterman …
